Pets

I am not a breeder.  However, after my kids were all grown, I decided to get me a Yorkie.  The search was long and difficult.  But, when I found Kitty Kitty and then Kingston I was so glad I did.  They are my family and keep me company.   I do have Yorkie, Yorkie-Bishon, and Shi Tzu and have 1-2 litters a year (will only do this for 2-3 years).  When I was searching for a Yorkie, all I found were scams or dogs that were over $1200.00.  So, I finally invested and decided to have a few litters to recoup my expense and offer some sought after pets at a reasonable price (less than half of what I had to pay for one)

Pet Training

It is important to start the training early.  They should learn "they typical house rules and manners" from the mamma.  Start off with just one command and practice it several times a day. Always give treats!

*Sit

*Stay

*Shake

*High Five

*Roll Over

*Dance

Make them behave

I use to think Kennel training was mean.  But, I learned it is the best way to potty train.  But, you have to take them out of the kennel and to their potty spot every couple hours.  Make sure you do not throw them in a kennel right after they eat.  Because they will need to potty within an hour of eating.  They don't like to potty where they lay, so they should learn to keep a clean house fairly quickly.

Pet Foods

Make sure they food you feed them has meat as a first ingredient.  Puppies also need some wet puppy food while their brains are developing.  So, be sure to include a good quality puppy food.

My favorites:

*4 Health

*Retriever

Make sure you never let them have grapes or raisins!

Shots

Weather you decide to take them to the vet or give the shots yourself is not as important and making sure you start their shots at 6 weeks.  They get some "immunity" from mamma while nursing.  But, my vet recommends shots at

*6 weeks

*9 weeks

*12 weeks

My vet also does not recommend the rabies shot until they are 6 months old, but ask your vet.

Pets & Cold

Large dogs may be suited for the outdoors as long as they have a warm shelter (Dog House) to sleep in.  But, small breeds do not handle the cold as well.  So, if you are getting a small breed, plan to keep it indoors.  Even large dogs should not be left outside when the temps and wind chill factors are nearing zero though.  Be responsible.

Pets & Family

When you select your "pet" remember that he/she will need to be taught your "house rules" and some breeds learn slower than others.  When you choose your "pet" he/she should become a member of your family and depends on YOU to take care of it just like kids do.  Feed them at the same times everyday.  They need toys to play with and chew on or they will find something of yours to entertain themselves with!  Take them outside for exercise and give them the love the deserve.  If you are not prepared to do that, then don't get a "pet".
